Same-sex marriage and partnership conversion

Since 1 July 2022, civil marriage in Switzerland has been open to all couples, with the same procedures and the same rights.

Getting married

The procedure is the same for all couples: preparatory procedure at the civil registry, same documents, same fees. Family reunification applies in the same way.

Converting a registered partnership

Registered partners can convert their partnership into a marriage by making a joint declaration at any civil registry office or Swiss representation. The fee is CHF 75. A ceremony is not required, but is possible for a surcharge.

Partnership or marriage concluded abroad

A same-sex marriage celebrated abroad can be registered in Switzerland as a marriage.
