Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions our clients ask us most often.

Can you get married in Switzerland as a tourist?

Yes, if your stay is legal throughout the procedure and until the wedding (visa or visa-free stay). The foreign partner must prove this to the civil registry.

How much does a civil wedding cost in Switzerland?

Around CHF 300 to 400 in official fees for the procedure and the ceremony, plus foreign documents, their legalisation and their translation. Our fees come on top: from CHF 490.

How long does it take?

From a few weeks to several months. Verification of documents by an embassy can add several months. The wedding must take place within 3 months of the procedure being closed.

Can documents be more than 6 months old?

Generally not: foreign civil status certificates must be less than 6 months old. We schedule the orders so they are valid on the day the file is submitted.

Do documents in English need to be translated?

It depends on the office: some embassies and offices accept English. To be safe, plan for a translation into French, German or Italian.

Is my marriage abroad valid in Switzerland?

Generally yes, but if one of you is Swiss it must be reported and registered to appear in the Swiss register.

Can my spouse work in Switzerland?

With a permit obtained through family reunification, a spouse can in principle work anywhere in Switzerland.

Can same-sex couples get married?

Yes, since 1 July 2022. Registered partnerships can be converted into a marriage for CHF 75.

Do we need an interpreter at the ceremony?

Yes, if one of you does not understand the office’s language. It is at your expense: we can provide one from CHF 180.

Are you lawyers?

No. We are an administrative and translation service. If your application is refused or you need to appeal, we refer you to a partner lawyer.

In which languages can you support me?

In French, English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Albanian, Serbian and Russian.
