The certificate of capacity to marry
Many countries ask Swiss citizens marrying there for proof that there is no impediment to the marriage. This is the certificate of capacity to marry (also known as a certificate of no impediment), issued by the Swiss civil registry after a preparatory procedure.
Who applies, and where
At the competent civil registry office in Switzerland. If you live abroad, through the Swiss representation. In some cantons, such as Geneva, at least one of the partners must be Swiss.
The documents
- Swiss partner: identity document and certificate of residence.
- Foreign partner: birth certificate showing parentage, proof of civil status, certificate of residence and identity document, less than 6 months old, apostilled and translated if necessary.
Cost
The fee for the certificate is CHF 30, on top of the preparatory procedure. Our package: CHF 290, including the check of both partners’ documents and follow-up until the certificate is issued.

Remember to register your marriage in Switzerland, then, if needed, apply for family reunification.
